RAW files hold unprocessed sensor data. They are what you want for editing and what nobody else can open. Every manufacturer has their own dialect — Canon writes CR2 and CR3, Nikon writes NEF, Sony writes ARW — and none of them open in a browser, an email client, or most web forms.

Invo reads RAW files locally. Because a single RAW can run past 100 MB, this is one of the few converters that will not reject the file or make you wait in an upload queue: nothing is transmitted at all.

How to use it

  1. Drop in your RAW files. A 100 MB file is no problem — there is no upload.
  2. Choose JPG or PNG. Leaving quality at 100% extracts the camera's own JPEG untouched.
  3. Press Process. Download individually or as a ZIP.

How the conversion works, and why it is fast

Nearly every RAW file already contains one or more ready-made JPEG previews, generated by the camera at the moment of capture. These are what your camera's rear screen displays, and on most bodies the largest one is at or near full sensor resolution.

Invo reads the file's internal directory structure and pulls that preview out directly. On a 31 MB Sony ARW this takes under a millisecond and yields a 6192 × 4128 JPEG — the full frame, developed by the camera's own processor using its colour science.

At 100% quality the original bytes are handed straight to you with no re-encoding at all, so there is zero generation loss. Lower the quality slider and the image is re-encoded to save space.

When a file has no usable preview, Invo falls back to a full decode with LibRaw: reading the sensor mosaic, demosaicing it, and applying the camera's recorded white balance. That path is far slower — 5 to 30 seconds depending on your device — but it handles files the fast path cannot.

The underlying decoder is LibRaw, which recognises over a thousand camera bodies.

RAW or JPEG — which should you keep?

Keep the RAW as your negative. It holds far more tonal information: pull back a blown sky or lift a black shadow and RAW will hold detail that a JPEG has already thrown away for good.

Convert to JPG when you need to share, upload, print through a lab, or send a shoot to a client for selection. A 45 MB RAW becomes a 4-8 MB JPEG that anyone can open.

Questions

Is there a file size limit?

No. Files are read straight from your disk into browser memory rather than uploaded, so a 100 MB RAW is fine.

Why is my converted image smaller than the sensor resolution?

Some cameras embed a reduced-size preview rather than a full-resolution one. When Invo detects this it falls back to a full LibRaw decode, which produces the complete frame but takes longer.

Does this edit exposure or white balance?

No. It converts. When the full decode path runs it applies the camera's own recorded white balance. For real editing, use desktop software.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.

My camera is very new and the file failed.

Brand-new sensors occasionally arrive before decoder support does. Converting the file to DNG with Adobe's free DNG Converter first will usually get it working.

Can I batch convert a whole shoot?

Up to 30 files at a time, then download the lot as a ZIP. A desktop will be considerably quicker than a phone.
